College Nicknames
updated on 21 May 2018

This list is compiled by Adam Joshua Smargon. Contact him at adam@smargon.net. The list is found at http://www.smargon.net/nicknames/.

This is the HTML format of the list of nicknames for colleges in the United States of America. (All versions currently available by FTP are unauthorized by the compiler, and probably outdated.) It is listed alphabetically by nickname, and then by the formal name of the school.

The common word "Fighting" has been eliminated, because so many schools have that word before their actual team name.

This list is very long, but it is not exhaustive, nor even close to it... look at the last part of this page to see why. I want to thank everybody from around the world who has contributed to this massive compilation...

Many people have asked if it is possible to re-list this compilation by the name of the college. Lots of people have complained of taking too much time to find whatever school they are looking for. Contrary to popular belief, this list was not created from a database -- it was done manually. To find a particular school, use the "find" or "search" feature in your web browser. Be sure to type in a phrase or word which is part of the official name of the school.

Schools that are in any athletic division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and/or the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) are accepted to this list. As a matter of fact, there are three criteria that a school must have to be included on this list. First, they must be in the United States of America. (This means only the fifty states and the District of Columbia.) Secondly, they must be able to grant at least bachelor's or baccalaureate degrees. Finally, it must not be primarily identified as a junior college (juco), a community college (CC), or some other type of two-year school that grants only associate's degrees and certificates. If I did include them, and this list would be ridiculously long. (As if it isn't already!)

Exceptions do exist, such as a handful of schools in Canada that play in the NAIA. However, because they are outside the United States of America, I cannot accept them on this list. However, I would be more than willing to put the links for other nickname lists in other countries (or for American junior colleges/community colleges) on this list.

Moreover, there are a number of schools in Florida (and a few other states, I imagine) that have a history of being a juco/CC, but are now identified as a state college, granting four-year degrees. I shall be happy to list those schools here.

If you have any comments, questions, or requests for changing specific entries on the list, please send me electronic mail so I can update it!

I do not have a nickname listed for these schools. If you know the nickname of one or more of them (or if you know that a school listed below has no nickname to begin with), or if you know of a school but not its nickname, please send me mail and I will add it to this part of the list.
